Vondelpark
Vondelpark: the green heart of Amsterdam. Who doesn't know the Vondelpark and yet dares say he has been to Amsterdam? The 140 years old park, a realm monument, is both captivating and multi-purpose. Very pleased at young and old from Amsterdam - and far! Just walking around, walking the dog, roller-skating, jogging, picnics, swimming with the children, playing soccer, get your first kiss: no park is as popular as the Vondelpark.
The Vondelpark get an average of 10 million visitors annually. That is per square meter more than Central park in New York!
This popularity has also a negative side: paths get trampled on and the large problems with the water household form a true drag to civil workers. Since 1999 Oud-Zuid has been busy with a large-scale modernisation. If everything goes according to expectations, these are rounded off in 2010.
By then the park will have been durably adapted to the requirements of a town park in the 21st century. The activities in the so-called "trunk", entrance Stadhouderskade, are virtually ready by now.
For a successful increase of the grass and plants a number of areas still remain inaccessible. The new moored pond close the Vondelbrug is not only beautiful, but also very functional for the improvement of water quality in the park.
Moreover at the blue tea house, or as it's name is Het Blauwe Theehuis, a small waterfall has arisen. The new pond forms, as it were, the source of the complete stream of water in the park. Also the design of water paces has repaired; father and son Zocher had devised the Vondelpark as a flow valley landscape with the beginning in the trunk.
Also the accessibility for the physically handicapped in the Vondelpark will be improved by adaptation of the entries.
