Nightlife in Amsterdam

Amsterdam nightlife is quite vibrant, yet fairly well hidden. There is a fair amount of clubs and bars where it is great dancing, drinking and partying, but as far as we care, it used to be better.
We have however, compiled a list of the most interesting and well known places to go to for a good night out. This list is in a completely arbitrary order, the top ones are not necessarily the best ones to go to!

This overview is just that, an overview. We have not made any differentiation between clubs based on door policy, music style or audience.

Amsterdam being the gay capital of Europe, has a lot of gay clubs and bars as well, but since we do not frequent and have never freqeunted these clubs we do not feel comfortable going into this scene. There are plenty of websites out there which can cover this scene a lot better, such as nighttours.nl.

Chemistry

Jan van Galenstraat 6-10.
Chemistry has moved to a new location, and now every Saturday night the Marcanti Kingdom venue is transformed into the spectacular Chemistry, with performances by famous local DJ's and various international guests. Check the agenda section to see what's going on.

Escape

Rembrandtplein 11.
The Escape theater is one of the larger clubs in town with a capacity of well over 2,000. Most nights the venue is rented out to party organizers; check the flyers section to see what's going on. Despite its size, expect to queue. The notoriously selective door policy seems to have relaxed a little.

Jimmy Woo

Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 18.
Hot new club where ancient Hong-Kong mixes with modern design. Black is the dominant color here, with a large lounge area with black leather sofa's and a black bar, and the opium table is not missing of course. The dance floor is downstairs, with excellent lighting and sound system. Famous for its selective door policy; either you're on the guest list, or you join the endless queue hoping the door bitch will favor you.

Dansen Bij Jansen

Handboogstraat 11.
The city's student club. Various music styles, although all on the safe side: disco, pop, house. Below is a small dance floor, with a quieter separate bar on the top floor. 'Student-only' means you need a valid student ID to get in. Jansen has a happy hour every night from 11pm-midnight. No dress restrictions.

De Duivel

Reguliersdwarsstraat 87.
Amsterdam's only hip-hop club, with rap and hip-hop beats and a crowd to match. Occasional live music on weekends.

Korsakoff

Lijnbaansgracht 161
Korsakoff combines a street level dance floor with a first floor bar. Alternative punk-rock and grunge sounds, and gathering place for Amsterdam's gothic scene. The bar has a balcony with a good view of the dance floor. Live music on Wednesdays.

Magazijn

Warmoesstraat 170.
Easygoing unpretentious club, without door policy. Industrial retro interior with a laid-back atmosphere. Nice old leather couches to lounge on, cheap(ish) drinks, and soulful tunes mixed by local DJ's.

The Mansion

Hobbemastraat 2.
Trendy club-restaurant, with a dance floor downstairs, several cocktail bars on the first floor, and a restaurant on the top floor. The restaurant serves en vogue modern Chinese cuisine. The interior is a real power trip, with ostrich leather on the walls, ceiling paintings inspired by the Sistine Chapel, and some walls covered with actual gold leaf. It might be wise to dress up a little bit!

Melkweg

Lijnbaansgracht 234
The Melkweg is mainly a live music venue, but during weekends it also hosts a variety of dance events. Some nights the venue is rented out; check the flyers section. In contrast to other clubs the Melkweg has a keen eye for 'world music' trends, and though the hippies of yesteryear have gone every november the Melkweg still hosts the Cannabis Cup. Mixed and relatively young audience.

Ministry

Regulierdwarsstraat 12
Small classy upstairs club with a intimate atmosphere. Different DJ's and musical styles, think speedgarage, 2-step, R&B-classics etc. Relaxed door policy, no dress restrictions.

More

Rozengracht 133.
In the former Roothaanhuis club RoXY seems to have risen from its ashes. Though the new venue lacks the charisma of the old movie theatre, it has ample space to live up to the expectations. More is a brightly lit club, with white walls, a white ceiling and pink concrete flooring, and in contrast with the fashionable lounges it clearly focuses on dancing. RoXY-diehards will recognise the programming.

Onassis

Westerdoksdijk 40.
Club-bar-restaurant on the border of IJ-river, with a large outdoor terrace. Sunbathing, lounging, dining, dancing, it's all possible here. The restaurant serves delicious Italian food, and as far as the club in the basement goes: think jazz bar meats beach club.

Paradiso

Weteringschans 6-8
Like the Melkweg Paradiso is mainly known as a venue for live music, but during the weekend it sometimes hosts club nights with local and international DJ's and occasional live acts. Check the flyers section fo more info.

Rain

Rembrandtplein 44
Hip club-bar-restaurant. Tasteful interior with lots of dark wood and bamboo, with color accents in lilac and purple. Downstairs is cocktail bar and dance floor, with right behind the bar the Comfortable Dining Area, where you can enjoy a snack or a light meal. Upstairs is the Main Dining Room, with a fashionable East-meets-West style international cuisine. Loungy, jazzy tunes on weekdays, during the weekend the music picks up a little bit, with a bit of hip-hop and house thrown in.

Sinners In Heaven

Wagenstraat 3-7
Sinners is Amsterdams one and only jet-set club, frequented by the likes of soccer players and soap actors. Not big, but an immaculate interior with lots of mirrors and designer furniture. Club nights with resident DJ's during the weekend. Come early and dress up if you want to get in without membership.

The Power Zone

Daniel Goedkoopstraat 1-3
Amsterdams first true megaclub with a capacity of well over 5000, located out of city center in a industrial zone near Amstel station. The Zone breaks with Amsterdam club tradition in that it does not have a door policy, and doesn't allow tipping. This is happy house territory for a broad audience, with a spacious interior with organic shapes like oval bars and round walls, and a large dance floor. Balcony with comfortable sofa's and chairs. The second floor houses the Comfort Zone, a 'lounge' area.

Club Zyon

Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 161
This club is divided into two areas. The Zyon 1 area has a modern, futuristic look about it, and has an upper balcony and bar overlooking the dance floor. Zyon 2 sports a typical club look with a spacious dance floor and a lounge area furnished with comfortable seats and sofas. Music varies from house, techno, and trance to R&B and Hip-Hop.
